I recently found these negatives from the 1977 Trans-AMA Motocross Series held October 30, 1977 at Rabbit Run MX Park in Plano (Dallas) Texas.
The race was bittersweet, as it represented the end of a wonderful period of my life. I had come of age in the 70's, riding and racing dirt bikes and had witnessed the exciting period of the early growth of motocross.
It was bittersweet, because as an 18 year old, I had just sold my tricked out Husky 250CR, trailer and riding gear to buy the camera I shot these photos with. Life required a change, and I'd made it. The race was the first I photographed and last I ever attended, but I did get to see DeCoster ride so it wasn't a bad way to end the period. Finding the negs brought back a ton of feelings and memories, and a tinge of sadness as well. Looking at them now, knowing they were shot by a teen with no experience, a new Nikon F2A body and a cheap 200mm Vivitar lens, I've really enjoyed them. I shot 3 rolls of black and white film, which at the time was a lot of money to me :D
If you recognize any of the riders that I have marked as unknown, please post a comment so I can update!
Thanks and hope you guys enjoy them - they are in the order I shot them at the time.
** Thanks to Nachtflug and Thereisnospoon on ADVRider for helping identify riders and "Thereisnospoon" for digging up his 1977 Unadilla official program detailing participants!
